Pilates reduces chronic musculoskeletal conditions

Researchers from the University of Salford in the U.K. have found that Pilates helps people with chronic musculoskeletal conditions function better and manage their conditions more effectively and independently. This study, which was published in the journal Musculoskeletal Care, was the first study to examine the individual perceptions of the effect of Pilates on the everyday lives of people with chronic musculoskeletal conditions.

  • In the study, the researchers aimed to explore the experiences and perceptions of adult patients with chronic musculoskeletal conditions after following a 12-week Pilates exercise program.
  • The study included data from 22 people who suffer from chronic musculoskeletal conditions, such as nonspecific low back pain, peripheral joint osteoarthritis, and a range of postsurgical conditions.
  • The participants were aged between 36 to 83 years old.
  • The researchers collected data through digital recordings of four focus groups in three North-West of England physiotherapy clinics.
  • Based on the researchers’ analysis, the 12-week Pilates exercise program caused significant physical improvements in people with chronic musculoskeletal conditions.
  • The Pilates exercise program also promoted an active lifestyle among the participants, improving their performance at work and hobbies.
  • It also increased the confidence of the participants and improved their psychological and social well-being.
  • Additionally, the Pilates exercise program enabled the participants to manage their condition more independently.
  • The participants were also motivated to continue with the exercise program.

In conclusion, these findings suggest that Pilates helps people with chronic musculoskeletal conditions to function better and manage their condition on their own. It also improved their psychological and social well-being, increasing their motivation to continue with the program and live a healthier lifestyle.
